This is 16 year old Atefeh Sahaaleh moments before she was murdered by the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2004. She was 16 years old.
She was convicted of “crimes against chastity” under Iran’s Sharia‑based penal code. State media falsely reported her age as 22 and accused her of adultery, though she was unmarried.
Atefeh was orphaned young, endured abuse, and had been arrested multiple times before for similar charges, receiving lashings each time. Her trial ignored her age and mental health, and the judge who sentenced her personally carried out the execution. She was hanged from a crane in a public square in Neka, in front of a crowd.
